Stops on the way
1. Kothamangalam and Neriamangalam
Head east from Kochi on NH 85. After Kothamangalam, you cross the old Neriamangalam bridge over the Periyar River and start climbing into the hills.
Food stop: pazham pori (sweet banana fritters) with tea at a roadside stall.
2. Cheeyappara and Valara waterfalls
These two waterfalls are right next to the highway, so you can see them without a long walk. They are at their fullest during and just after the monsoon. The rocks are slippery, so take care.
3. Spice gardens near Adimali
Around Adimali and Kallar, many family-run spice gardens offer short tours. You can see pepper, cardamom, nutmeg and cloves growing, and buy fresh spices to take home.
4. Munnar town and the tea estates
Munnar sits at about 1,600 m, surrounded by tea estates on every hill. Visit the tea museum to learn how tea is made, and drive out to Mattupetty Dam or Eravikulam National Park, home of the Nilgiri tahr, a mountain goat. Eravikulam usually closes for a few weeks in early spring for the tahr’s calving season, so check dates before you go.
5. The Gap Road and Top Station
South-east of Munnar, the road towards Bodimettu passes through Lockhart Gap. This stretch, called the Gap Road, has wide views over deep valleys, often filled with morning mist. It can be closed after heavy rain because of landslides, so check before driving.
For more views, drive to Top Station (about 1,880 m) on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. On a clear morning, you can look far down into the Tamil Nadu plains.
Food stop: appam with vegetable or chicken stew, or parotta with a spicy curry, at a small local restaurant.
Tips for the trip
- Start early from Kochi to avoid traffic and reach the hills by late morning.
- Drive slowly on the hairpin bends and use your horn before blind curves.
- Avoid the heavy monsoon months (roughly June to August) if you can, as landslides can block roads.
- Pack a light jacket. Munnar can be cool in the evenings, especially from December to February.
- Book stays early for long weekends and holidays.
